PS Vita Wont Play PS2 or PS3 Games

With the EU PSN Store update that arrived on Wednesday, it brought across the PS2 game downloads that had been available in NA for years.

Understandably this sparked interest in possible Vita functionality as the handheld launches next week. However thanks to a rather lengthy Vita FAQ posted on the Playstation blog, we now know that PS2 games wont be functional. It also appears that PSOne games may not be compatible out of the box either, just the downloadable PSP titles and Minis seem to be available from the starting line.

“Users can play supported digital PSP titles and supported minis. In regard to PSone classics titles, we will announce further details when they are ready. PlayStation does not have plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point.” reads the FAQ.

The FAQ also answers questions about Playstation Plus support, currently stating that: “There are no details to share on PlayStation Plus support at this time”, which seems highly peculiar to abandon the service on the handheld, but currently PS+ doesn’t (easily) exist on the PSP so it’s not a big surprise.

When asked about PDF and Flash support Sony only had the staple “There are no details to share at this time” to say in reply, which is a little disheartening but again not the biggest deal in the world.

It is nice to see though that the list of PSP titles that will be compatible with the device will continue to grow as time goes by, and that you can even take in game screenshots on all the games.
